Lokai Horse
Lokai horse is a tough mountain horse. It is widely used for pack and transport in the high areas of Tajikistan. It was originally bred in the 16th century by the Lokai tribe of Uzbekistan.

Lokai horses are the shortest in stature among the Central Asian breeds. They are not sufficiently uniform in type; the head is sometimes coarse and bulky and sometimes lacking breed character.

Found in the region of Tajikistan, Russia, the Lokai falls somewhere between the definition of a horse and a pony. Its height averages 14.3 hands high, technically putting it in the horse bracket, although they are usually smaller than this.

However they did confirm that the Lokai, found in the Taijikistan region, does sometimes display the characteristic curly coat. Could the Lokai be the actual originator of the Bashkir Curly breed? That, too, appears to be almost impossible.

The Akhal-Teke thoroughbred significantly influenced the development of cultured horse-breeding in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and other counties of the East. Among these are the Karabair, Lokai, Naiman, Karabach, and Kabardin.
So named because of its supposed Russian Bashkir descendant, the American Bashkir Curly is unlike the Russian Bashkir, which is rarely curly-haired. The Russian Lokai, on the other hand, is known for its curly coat.
Research done by Shan Thomas for the CS Fund and resulting in the report, Myth and Mystery: The Curly Horse in America, indicates that the Russian breed most often found with the curly coat is the Lokai breed, found in the Taijikistan region.
