Lusitanos are well known for their incredible work ethic, but this can lead some riders to think that they can work Lusitanos more than would be good for their physical and psychological health.

 


Lusitanos are generally gray, bay or chestnut, though they can be of any solid color, including black, dun and palomino. Only bays are bred at the Alter Real stud.They usually stand 15.2 and 15.

In America Lusitanos and Andalusians are registered together under the International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association (IALHA.)

Most Lusitanos and Andalusians do, and the rest has another mtDNA type. However, this other mtDNA type is also very different from the Sorraia's mtDNA type.

The Horse that Influenced the History of Man and Shaped Most
The entire experience of discovering this magical horse represented a quantum leap in my equestrian career.

In fact, until 1960, Lusitanos and Andalusians were registered together in the Spanish Stud Book of the Associaзгo Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano (APSL), also known as the Portuguese Lusitano Breeders Association.

The Sorraia characteristics of many Lusitanos and not a few Andalusians are too obvious. I have seen Lusitanos which were practically indistinguishable from Sorraias. It is possible though that this influence came through male lines.

HISTORY OF THE ALTER REAL LUSITANOS

The Andalusians (Spanish) and the Lusitanos (Portuguese) horses are different branches of the same breed. The University of Kentucky's blood testing on the breeds proves that there is no difference in genetic markers or variability.

These horses are sometimes gaited just as in case of other Lusitanos and Andalusians. In 1997, a largely Alter Real-bred stallion proved all other gaited horses in Germany to be dull in front of him and won the title of Gaited Horse of the Year.

This horse breed origins from Portugal, precisely it began as carriage horses in Lisbon, where the purpose was to provide horses for the Royal Stables that where suitable for classical equitation. But no one is certain about Lusitanos' origin.

Good jumping horses include thoroughbreds, lusitanos and hot-blooded horses. Call local jumping stables and ask for inventory, as it's simpler to review many horses in one barn than having to go to several barns to look at just one horse each time.
