The Mangalarga Marchador is a breed of horse. Highly regarded as the National Horse, there are over 350,000 registered Mangalarga Marchador horses in Brazil and a number found in several countries outside its Brazilian homeland.

The Mangalarga Marchador is of good size with an average height of over 15 hands and weighing 900 to 1100 pounds. Horses smaller than 14.2 hands are not being accepted for registration.

The Mangalarga Marchador, originating in Brazil in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, has, as the true expression of the breed, the "marcha".

The Mangalarga Marchador breed was used with the purpose of bringing better refinement to the Campolina. In 1934 the herdbook was closed and the introduction of outside breeds was no longer accepted.

Today?s Mangalarga Marchadors are a versatile horse used in many disciplines, including western competitions, dressage, endurance, jumping and trail.

Till the final development and refinement of the breed many other bloodlines had influence, such as Anglo-Norman, Clydesdale, Holsteiner, Mangalarga Marchador (to bring better refinement to the Campolina) and the American Saddle Horse.

The Campolino horse is a slightly heavier version of Brazil's Mangalarga Marchador and therefore has a great deal of Arabian blood. It is used for light draft work and stands around 15 hh. Their coat color can be gray, sorrel, roan, or bay.

The Mangalarga Horse is also known as the Marchador and Mangalarga Marchador. This horse breed possesses two special gaits. These gaits are-marcha picada and marcha batida. Both of them are four beat gaits and present moments of triple hoof support.

Breeds of gaited horses include the American Saddlebred, Paso Fino, Icelandic horse, Missouri Foxtrotter, Mangalarga Marchador, Racking horse, Peruvian Paso, Spotted Saddle horse, Rocky Mountain Horse, Walkaloosa and Tennessee Walker.

Mangalarga acquired stock from Campo Alegre and awakened interest in the horse among local ranchers. They quickly saw the advantages of the smooth, cadenced, and rhythmic gait, the "marcha", and the horses were soon known as "Mangalarga Marchadors." ...
