The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse was developed in the rugged Ozark hills during the 19th century by settlers who needed easy riding, durable mounts that could travel long distances at a sure-footed, ground consuming gait.

The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse originated in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas and Missouri, America, during the 1820s. As such, it is one of America's oldest breeds of horse.

The Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association was founded in 1948, and today there are more than 42,000 registered Fox Trotters living in the United States and Canada.

These gaited breeds include the American saddle horse, the Tennessee walking horse, and the Missouri fox trotting horse. The American saddle horse (see photograph) has a small head and spectacular high-stepping movements.

The breed association was formed in 1948, and was recognized in 1958 as the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breeders' Association (MFTHBA).

Gaining Ground with the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse
The horse breed name says it all. The Missouri Fox Trotting horse is a native of Missouri. Like many other horse breeds, this one was bred not for mere show, entertainment or companionship.

This organization was to become recognized as the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breeder’s Association in 1958.
