The Mongolian horse ( Mongolian, mori or mor' ) is the native horse breed of Mongolia and the Mongol people, and the breed is purported to be largely unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan .

The Mongolian horse is one of the most important and numerous breeds found among the indigenous horse breeds of China. They are distributed widely throughout the Northeast, North China and the Northwest, mainly in the high plains and highland areas.

The Mongolian horse is found in the high plains and highland areas of northern China and Mongolia.

The Chinese Mongolian horse is thought to have existed for over 5,000 years. Developing in the regions of Northen China and Mongolia, the breed was not domesticated until about 2,000 B.C.

In addition to the Mongolian horse, it is known that some Indian stock were taken to Indonesia (although it is unknown exactly which breeds), and the Dutch also brought various eastern breeds to the country during the 18th century.

The stock that resulted was believed to be a product of many combinations of Mongolian horse, Turkmene and Tarpan. Since the 80s the number of horses in Albania has increased greatly.

All these pony breeds trace their ties to the Arabian and Mongolian horses. Influence of many different Eastern breeds may be seen on these breeds of pony. These ponies are all very sure footed, steadfast and able to endure in a ruthless environment.

If the breed's ancestors came from these regions, it may have a link with the Mongolian horse as well as with the Arab-type strains that predominate in northern Iran and the steppe lands north of the Black and Caspian seas.

They have been described as being similar in appearance to the Przewalski or the Mongolian horse. Some Kiso have dorsal stripe, which is one criteria for measuring the pureness of the horse as a Kiso.

They were sturdy dun-coloured animals, the size of a large pony. They were predecessors of the Tarpan and possibly Przewalski's Horse, as well as the domesticated Mongolian horse. The Tarpan itself became extinct in the late 19th century.

The population grew to 25 horses by 1993, but had dropped back to 19 by 2001, despite the great efforst to preserve this breed of great antiquity. The Miyako resemble Mongolian horse and nowadays they are mainly used as riding ponies, ...

The Suoke carries its tail very high as did the ancient T'ang horse. The Kesheng is found in Kesheng Mongolian Autonomous Region in the province of Qinghai. The breeding of the Kesheng is mixed with Mongolian horses.
