These early Nez Perce horses were considered to be of high quality. Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition wrote in his February 15, 1806 journal entry: "Their horses appear to be of an excellent race; they are lofty, ...

Lewis and Clark noted on their expedition that the Nez Perce horses were of superior stock. Although spotted horses were in evidence, it is believed that the Nez Perce did not actually breed for spots until after their encounter with Lewis and Clark.
