- Nonius -
The Nonius breed developed in Hungary during the early 19th century. The bred gets its name from the sire Nonius Senior, who foaled in Normandy in 1810 and was taken by the Hungarian cavalry in 1813 after the defeat of Napoleon at Leipzig.

The precursors of the Barb/Iberian horse are attributed to having descended from Equus stenonius, one of the six original types of wild horses known to man.

They descended from several Austrian cavalry horses brought from all around the world: Nonius, Furioso and Arabian, which later in the 19th century were crossed with Thoroughbred and more Arabian blood in order to refine the breed.

Through selective crossing of native Hungarian horse breeds: Kisber Felver, Gidran, Furioso-North Star, and Nonius to established "warmblood sport horse " breeds such as Holsteiner, Hannoverian, and Dutch Warmblood.

Purebred Arabian, Nonius and Haflinger horses are being crossed with the Albanian and several improved types are emerging. The goal is to develop a refined yet substantial horse that is ideal for many different uses.

It is also likely that in the past there have been infusions of Anglo-Arabian, Salerno (horse) and Hispano (horse) blood into the breed and, more recently, some Nonius and some English Thoroughbred blood.

Until 1855, the dams of the Gidrán chief stallions were 33% Arabian, 22% Transylvanian, 16% Spanish, 16% Nonius, 6% Native Hungarian, and 6% Gidrán mares.

Purebred Arabian, Haflinger and Nonius horses are interbred with Albanian horses to produce improved types. The main purpose behind this interbreeding is to increase the size of the horses so that they can perform agricultural work better.

Later also Trakehner, Normandy, Oldenburg and Nonius stallions were involved, creating a useful and easy keeping multi-purpose horse for the agriculture in the Wuerttemberg region.

The breed came about when the stud crossed other native Hungarian horses like the Nonius (horse), Kisber Felver, Gidran and Furioso. These breeds have also helped breeds such as the Holsteiner, Hanoverian and Dutch Warmblood.
