The Orlov Trotter is one of Russia's most highly respected breeds and considered the epoch of Russian Horse-Breeding. They are used for pleasure mounts and also as draft animals for agricultural work.

In 1936, the local government decided to import Don, Orlov Trotter and Anglo-Don horse to cross with the local breeds. However, the crosses did not result in quality animals through the second generation.

Among them are the Tartar, Kirghis, Mongol, and Cossack horses. A Persian stallion and a Dutch mare produced the Orlov trotter in 1778, named after Count Orlov, the owner of the stud farm where the mating took place.
Since then Kazakh horses were influenced by many breeds - Mongolian, Karabair, Arabian and Akhal-Teke. In the late 20th century, Kazakh horses have been improved by the Thoroughbred, Orlov Trotter and Don.
