Palominos' with their golden coats and blond manes are usually thought of as a color not a breed.

 


Palominos are evident in most equine activities ranging from led to saddle and harness activities. Palominos of Quarter Horse origin are the most commonly seen.

Palominos are multi-purpose horses. They are admired not only for their beauty but for their versatility, maneuverability, and endurance.

Palominos that are registered in one of the following 7 horse associations, and those that meet the color requirements, are eligible for registration and participation in the PHBA: American Quarter Horse Association, American Morgan Horse Association, ...

Pale palominos are sometimes called Isabellas, after Queen Isabella de-Bourbon of Spain, who is much remembered for pawning her jewels to fund Columbus' voyages to the "New World".

Many non-palominos have a gold coat or a light mane, or both. Horses that have a gold body but a black mane and tail are Buckskins.

PALOMINO Palominos are golden horses with light colored, or "flaxen" manes and tails.

Individuals who own Palominos that are registered with the American Morgan Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Saddlebred Horse Association, Arabian Horse Registry, International Arabian Horse Association, Jockey Club, ...

Various breeds of horses can be Palominos. Quarter Horses make up about fifty percent of registered Palominos, while the remainder are Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, American Saddle Horses, Arabians, Morgans and Tennessee Walking Horses.

This is especially seen in the palominos and buckskins, as well as the lighter bays, although some horses "shimmer" more than others, and is thought to have been used as camouflage in the desert, where the heat causes the desert to shimmer.

Palominos were probably first selected for their beautiful color in Spain. They accompanied the conquistadors to the New World, where they were perpetuated by early Mexican horse breeders.

Due to their unusual color, Palominos stand out in a show ring, and are much sought after as parade horses.

Often, Palominos will exhibit some Spanish characteristics, which is a throwback to their roots, but there is still a general lack of conformational conformity.

There are three types of Palominos; the stock type, mostly Quarter Horses; the Golden American Saddlebred; and the pleasure types.

Palomino horses refers to the color of the horse and not the breed, thus, palominos come in all kinds of breeds.

The American Cream Draft Horse is strictly of draft breeding and must not be confused with Palominos or other light breeds.

Quarter Horses come in a variety of solid colors, roans, palominos, greys, grullos, buckskins and duns. Markings like stockings, stars, strips and blazes are common.

Coloured breeds are bred for their coat colors or markings. Some color breeds are Pintos, Palominos and Buckskins. These horses can sometimes be registered with more than one association.

Most palominos have a golden coat with a white mane and tail, and usually have dark eyes (though occasional individuals have blue eyes due to other factors). A single dilution gene acting on a bay base coat produces a buckskin colored horse.

Any color is allowed - except piebald or skewbald. Chestnut, bay, brown and black are most usual. Greys are rare, but there are a number of duns, palominos and creams.

Horses of proper colour, of proper saddle-horse type, and from at least one registered parent of several light breeds can be registered as Palominos. This colour is popular for pleasure and parade classes.

As I ran across my perfectly manicured 100-acre equestrian estate, and into the heated tack room of my 15-stall horse barn, both shock and surprise met me. All of my horses were gone! No Thoroughbreds, no Appaloosas, no Paints or Palominos.

To qualify for entry in the breeding register, stallions and mares should have one parent in the register, and the other must be Quarter Horse, Arab, or Thoroughbred Crossings that produce Palominos may include Albino, but the favoured cross, ...

The most common colors are grey and dun, but there are blacks, bays, browns, chestnuts, palominos, and an occasional roan. Black points are common, but paints are not acceptable.

They stand between 15 and 17hh and all colors are allowed; in fact, the Mulassier is probably the only draft horse whose genetic palette includes the Cream genes, and so palominos and buckskins are found. They are found only on the lava isles.

Greys are rare, but there are a number of duns, palominos and creams. The Welsh Cob is beyond doubt the most versatile of animals in existence and long ago established a reputation as the best ride and drive animal in the world.
