Percherons are noted for heavy muscling in the lower thighs and for an aspect of unusual ruggedness and power. Also characteristic of the Percheron is the clean action and quality conformation of the feet and legs.

 


Percherons probably owe their size and weight (the largest Percherons can weigh as much as 2,600 pounds) to their use as battle mounts during the middle ages.

Percherons are generally black or gray, though chestnut or sorrel are acceptable for registration in the US with a DNA test confirming their parentage.

Percherons were first imported to the United States in 1839, by Edward Harris of Moorestown, New Jersey. The stallions, Normandy and Louis Napoleon, were imported to Ohio in 1851.

Percherons are very versatile. They are readily adapted to varying climates and conditions. They have the strength to pull heavy loads and the graceful style to pull a fine carriage.

Percherons are usually between 16 .2 and 18 hands tall and weigh between 1,700 up to 2,600 pounds. Although they're usually gray or black, other colors are sometimes seen and are permissible in some registries.

Edward Harris of Moorestown, New Jersey first imported Percherons to the United States in 1839.

Most of these French horses were Percherons, which the Canadians used to improve their domestic breeds. The Percheron was a good choice -- it continues to be one of the only work horses which can easily trot for extended periods of time.

Records gleaned from early registrations confirm that 'Old Granny' was mated to Belgians,, Percherons, Greys, Dunns, Sorrels, all being of draft bloodlines and often the rich cream, pink skin, white mane and tail and amber eyed foals were dropped.

Draft Breton- This sub-category was the result of crossing the Breton with Boulonnais, Ardennes and Percherons. This horse is a heavy and powerful animal used for draft work.

However, a strong nucleus of Percherons remained on farms in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Co. Durham, and Hampshire.

Lighter than the heavy breeds such as the Percherons though more solid in build than breeds such as Arabians and Thoroughbreds.

The black is a Percheron, so I am sure he didn't have any bay in his background (Percherons can only be black or gray). The chestnut had a bay mother and a chestnut father.
