The Pleven breed of horse was developed in 1898 in the Klementina stud (now called the Georgi Dimitrov Agricultural Center) in Bulgaria. Plevens are mostly Anglo-Arab, but Gidran stallions were later added to the breed.

 


Pleven description
The Pleven is well put together. Head is straight, neck is long, muscular, and the breed has a nice topline. Chest is broad and deep with nicely sloping shoulders, and a deep, round barrel.

Also called Plevna & Pleveska, the Pleven is a half-bred horse that comes from Bulgaria. Development began in 1898 by crossing the best local animals with Arabian & Anglo-Arabian blood and later Gidran stallions were introduced.

Plevens are always chestnut in color, and stand at 15.2 to 16 hands high.

The Danubian horse is a 20th century product of the State stud near Pleven. It was developed from Nonius stallions crossed with Anglo-Arab mares. It is a surprise that it seems to be thought of mainly as a draught horse.

The originated during the 1920's from crossing the Nonius, Pleven, halfbred riding and local breeds with Russian Trotter and Thoroughbred breeding. They are usually black or bay. Reference: Mason, I.L. 1996.

The Danubian, or Dunav horse, is actually a Bulgarian breed developed in 1924 at G. Dimtrov stud (located near Pleven) by crossing Nonius stallions with half-bred mares.
