Ponies
A pony is a small type of horse that stands less than 14.2 hands high. This doesn't mean that a midget horse is automatically a pony. Ponies are members of distinctive breeds, and you get a pony by breeding two ponies.

Ponies
Ponies are any horses other than Arabians that are shorter than 14.2 hands. They are generally very sturdy, intelligent, energetic, and sometimes stubborn. The coat is of all colours, mainly dark, and the mane and tail are full.

Greek Ponies
SKYROS: Greece's smallest pony, the Skyros, stands 9.1-11hh. It comesfrom the island of Skyros, where it is used as a pack pony and for lightagricultural work.

Welsh Ponies and Cobs
Their early history dates back to before the Romans arrived, the Welsh Mountain Pony was living in a semi-wild state in the hills and valleys of Wales where the winters were severe and vegetation was sparse.

WELSH PONIES (COB TYPE) - Section C
At the turn of the century when the Stud Book was founded, there were several good sires between 12 hands and 13 hands 2 inches and these were classified into Section B of the Welsh Stud Book.

The ponies are very stocky and b with deep chests and large girths; the large capacity of the digestive system is important in winter as they consume large quantities of coarse plant material which provides them with internal warmth.

These ponies were originally used for pulling carriages and in ploughing. Once the use of children in cold mines was banned, these child-sized ponies were used underground. The Industrial Revolution increased the use of these ponies significantly.

Welsh ponies were imported by American breeders as early as the 1889s. George E. Brown of Aurora, Illinois, appears to have been one of the first real Welsh enthusiasts, importing a large number of animals between 1884 and 1910.

Welsh ponies are usually very hardy, although they can suffer from founder on lush feed. Founder is a disease affecting the feet which if left untreated can cause permanent lamness.

The Haflinger species of ponies was brought in from Austria so that the abilities of the horses in the hilly areas of the region could be improved. Albanian horses are mainly used for carriage, light draft work and riding.

Ponies
These are small horses with specific bone structure, musculature and temperament. As compared to the other types of horses, ponies exhibit thicker coat, mane and tails.

Ponies are 14.2 hands (abbreviated hh) (1.47 m) at the withers or smaller, while a horse is anything taller than 14.2 hh at the withers.

By New Zealand standards the Icelandic is technically classified as a pony: most Icelandics today are between 13hh and 14hh. But they are extremely strong and are expected to carry any adult, no matter how tall or heavy.

There are a number of pony and horse breeds with ancient histories. Indeed, some breeds belong to bloodlines that are so old that they may even be considered prehistoric.

Ponies are generally considered intelligent and friendly, though sometimes they also are described as stubborn or devious. The differences of opinion often result from an individual pony's degree of proper training.

Ponies on Dartmoor are believed to have been in existence for quite some time. They have survived unbelievable hardships from both nature and man.

Fell Ponies have an incredible stamina, they are very sue footed and very kind. The prominent colour is black, although bays, browns and greys are recognized.

Dales ponies excel in many equine disciplines giving rise to the term "The Great All-Rounder". Under saddle they are steady, and full of stamina. They are calm enough for children, but are better suited to adolescents or adults.

These ponies from Assateague Island are best known for the annual roundup and auction that takes place as a fund-raiser in Chincoteague, Virginia. Chincoteague Ponies live under harsh conditions and are therefore extremely hardy and intelligent.

Native ponies from Ireland were influenced with Thoroughbred, Hackney and Arab blood, giving them their excellent smooth paces combined with speed and stamina.
