Pony of the Americas
The Pony of the Americas, more commonly referred to as the POA, is a popular and growing breed that was designed as a mount especially for young riders who were too big for a small pony but not ready for a full sized horse.

The POA first was developed in 1954, when Leslie Boomhower, an Iowa breeder of Shetland Ponies, founded the breed. A friend offered him an Arabian/Appaloosa mare that had been accidentally bred to a Shetland Pony stallion.

This breed of ponies must have Appaloosa color & characteristics to become permanently registered. They must also be 46-56 inches in height at 5 years of age.

A pony is a certain kind of small horse. Ponies are 14.2 hands (abbreviated hh) (1.47 m) at the withers or smaller, while a horse is anything taller than 14.2 hh at the withers.

The Pony of the Americas is one of the very few breeds to be certain of itsorigin, no doubt because it is one of the newest. It began in 1956, when MrLeslie L.

The Pony of the Americas is a relatively new western pony breed that comes from the United States. However, their original bloodlines, that of the Appaloosa are very, very old and can be traced back to central Asia.

The term "pony" can be used in general(or affectionately) for any small horse, regardless of its actual measurements, or breed. However, some equine breeds are not considered ponies, even if they are under 14.2 hh.

The Pony of the Americas is a new breed founded during the 1950s and developed through an Appaloosa mare crossed with a Shetland stallion. The first foal of this cross was called Black Hand 1, who is the foundation sire.

The Welsh Pony (Section C) and the Welsh Cob (Section D) differ only in size and were probably the result of crosses of the Welsh Mountain Pony with Spanish horses and possibly the now extinct Old Welsh Carthorse.
