The Andalusian may be referred to as the Purebred Spanish Horse but, in reality, its ancestry is a hodge-podge of various native and foreign horse breeds, including the Sorraia, Galician, Pottok, Garrano, and Asturian.

This horse is related to other breeds from the Cantabrian-Pyrenean branch, including the Garrano, the Galician pony, the Asturian, the Thieldon, the Sorraia, the Navarre horse, the Pottok, the Merens and the now extinct Catalan horse.
