They may be chestnut (usually with flaxen mane and tail), red roan, or bay. The head is light for a draft breed, with a straight or slightly convex profile, and it is set on a short, broad and muscular neck.

Other recognized colors are bay, black, brown, buckskin,dun, red dun, gray, grullo, palomino, red roan, blue roan, bay roan, perlino and cremello.

The color gray is prevalent among the breed. There are also many bay roans and red roans. Solid colors of chestnut, sorrel, bay and black complete the palette of colors. White markings below the knee and on the face are common.

Maximum height is 15.25 hands high, with a minimum of 13.75 hh for mares an 14 hh for male horses. They are usually dun in color with a dorsal stripe, but also come in bay, brown, black, and blue or red roan.

The most prominent of these colors is sorrel (reddish brown), with the others being bay, black, brown, buckskin, chestnut, dun, red dun, gray, grullo, palomino, red roan and blue roan.

Roan refers to white mixed with other colours at birth: blue roan is white mixed with black; red roan is mixed white and bay; and strawberry roan is white and chestnut.
