Roan, along with dominant white, sabino-1 and tobiano have all been mapped to the KIT gene region on Chromosome 3. KIT is a large complex protein involved in many important aspects of metabolism.

 


The Roan is a type of coat color in horses that is a mixture of white hairs with a base coat of a different color. In this case, it must be a black base coat in order for it to be a Blue Roan. These two colors mixed give the coat a bluish tint.

Roan: The body is coloured with white hairs ticked through the coat. The colouring on the body can be any colour and different names are often given depending on the base colour.

The roan coat color some Bucovina have suggests a proportion of Ardennes blood. Which is not a surprise since Ardennes were introduced into Romania after the Second World War to regenerate local stock.

The Arabian Horse Association recognizes purebred horses with the coat colors bay, gray, chestnut, black and roan. Although many Arabians appear "white," this is the natural action of the gray gene.

PtHA lists the non white-areas or colors of the coats of the pinto horses as bay, bay roan, black, blue roan, brown, buckskin, chestnut, cremello, dun, gray, grulla, palomino, perlino, red dun, red roan, seal brown, silver dapple or sorrel.

Their predominant color is black, other colors include brown, gray, bay and occasionally roan. Their hooves are of a hard blue horn, and well-shaped legs have the dense bone.
