Owners of Rocky Mountain horses when asked to describe their horses, how they differ from other breeds invariably described their calmness and gentleness.
Many of the present Rocky Mountain Horses® carry his bloodline. The breed is known for gentleness. It is an easy keeper and a wonderful riding horse with a strong heart and endurance.
But Rocky Mountain Horses can be any solid coat color. The horse must have a natural ambling four-beat gait (single foot or rack) with no evidence of pacing.
The Mountain Pleasure Horse is the gaited breed that existed in Kentucky over 160 years ago and from which breeders developed Tennessee Walking Horses, American Saddlebred Horses and Rocky Mountain Horses.
He fathered many fine horses up until the ripe old age of 37 and many of the present Rocky Mountain Horses carry his bloodline. The basic characteristics of the breed are a medium sized horse of gentle temperment with an easy ambling four-beat gait.
It would appear that either the silver gene can cause eye abnormalities (i.e. it has pleiotropic affects), or that (in some Rocky Mountain Horses) it is tightly linked to another gene that causes them.
