The Russian Don Horse serves superbly both in harness and under saddle. This breed was the mount of the famed and feared Cossack Cavalry. It was the Cossack's skill at breeding that made the Don such a rugged horse.

The Don probably originated in the 18th and 19th centuries from crosses between the Mongolian horses and the Turkoman Horse, Karabakh, Akhal-Teke and Orlov Trotter stallions.

RUSSIAN DON HORSE
An under saddle and harness horse, the Russian Don Horse, got it start in the Cossack Calvary. This was the most feared, but famous of cavalries and made up of tough and rugged horses.

The Russian Don is robust and sturdy, well boned and muscled. The Don is the most wide-bodied of the Russian riding horses, except for several local breeds such as Kazakh.

The breed was developed from a cross of the Russian Don with the English Thoroughbred. Of the 657 mares used to produce the Budyonny, 359 were Anglo-Don. 261 Anglo-Don X Chernomor and 37 Anglo-Chernomor.

The new breed was developed by crossing native Kazakh steppe horses with Russian Don, Stralets, Astrakhan (improved Kalmyk) and halfbred Thoroughbred stallions. Nevertheless, at the onset the crossbreeding was unsuccessful.

The Russian Don has also contributed the golden chestnut color which prevails in the Budyonny breed, although black and bay have been seen.

Native Kazakh steppe horses were infused with blood of Thoroughbred Russian Don, Astrakhan and Stralet.
