Saddlebreds are also known for being five gaited, and this is a trait which was passed down from their ancestors. This breed was first developed in the 18th century by Americans who bred the Thoroughbred with the Narragansett Pacer.

Saddlebreds come in almost all colors, ranging in height from 14 to 17 hands, and weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds.

Saddlebreds excel in the classes offered at these shows which include 5 gaited classes, 3 gaited classes, fine harness classes, park classes and pleasure classes (show and country).

Most Saddlebreds are born with the walk, trot and canter, plus the inherent ability to learn the slow gait (stepping pace) and rack. Some rack naturally at birth, but many must be trained to slow gait and rack.

The first Saddlebreds appeared in the 18th century, when a few colonists began crossing the Narragansett pacer with the English Thoroughbred. Pacers were another breed specific to the Americas, bred for their hardiness as well as their riding comfort.

In five gaited classes, Saddlebreds are asked to 'slow-gait", which originally could be either the stepping pace, the running walk, or the fox-trot, as the rider chose.

Saddlebreds served as the mounts of many famous generals; Lee on Traveller, Grant on Cincinnati, Sherman rode Lexington, and Stonewall Jackson's mount was Little Sorrell.

Due to their good looks Saddlebreds have been used along side other film horses in films such as Zorro, National Velvet, Gone with the Wind and Mr Ed and the Lone Rangers "Silver".

Chestnut in all its shades predominates, with browns, blacks and bays available and also there are Saddlebreds that have been especially bred for the palomino and pinto colours. Greys also occur.
