Shagya
Shagyas are born riding and carriage horses. The Shagya Arabian is a special Arabian breed which is not very well known worldwide because of its rarity.

The founding sire was Shagya, a partbred Arabian stallion with some ancestors of the Kehilan and Siglavy strains. Born in Syria in 1830, he was taller than the average Arabian of the time,standing 15.

The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) recognizes three separate breeds of the Arabian Horse. In North America, most Arabian aficionados are acquainted with the purebred Arabian and the Half Arabian breeds.

Shagya and Gidran Arab Horse
The Shagya and Gidran Arab are two Hungarian breeds derived from the pure Arab. Both evolved during the 19th century at Bbolna and Mezohegyes, respectively.

Shagyas are typically 15 to 16 hands in height, with a minimum of 7 inches of bone at the cannon. Grey is the most common color, although there are also bay, chestnut and black Shagyas. Limbs are well-formed and dry.

These attractive horses are mostly grey in colour and show a strong Arab influence with their concave profiles. Shagya Arabians are slightly heavier than their cousin the Arab but have the same lively, energetic temperament.

The Shagya Arabian was developed as a cavalry horse for the famous Hungarian light cavalry. The origins of the breed lie in the Babolna stud in Hungary around 1816.

A part-Arabian gray stallion Shagya was brought in Bablona in 1836 and was crossed with native mares to achieve cavalry goals. Thus he was major founding sire of the Shagya Arabian breed.

Arabian Shagya X and Orlov Trotters Barzoi and Legion were used for blood freshening between WWI and WWII. Favory blood lineage returned to Kladruby after the WWII, when the Kladruber population was reduced.

Thoroughbred, Trakehner, Selle Francais, Anglo-Arabian, Arabian, and Shagya Arabian. With a documented pedigree of four [4] generations. Minimum size requirement of 15.2 [ 157 cm]. These breeds may be registered and branded as Foundation stock.

The breed was developed through a combination of oriental blood, Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, Shagya, and Gidran with some Thoroughbred, Furioso, Austrian Hungarian half-bred, and Przedswit, which is a type of Thoroughbred half-bred.

The Shagya Arabian stallions Gazal III and Siglavy II were then used in order to establish a more stable Anglo-Arabian type. The result was a heterogeneous type known for their excellent jumping and galloping ability.

Accepted crosses: Trakehner, Thoroughbred, Arabian, Anglo-Arabian, Shagya Arabian, and Selle Francais with a four generation pedigree and minimum size of 15.2 hands.

The Trakehner studbook, however, is closed to all outside blood except the Thoroughbred and the Arabian (including Anglo and Shagya Arabs).
