The founding sire was Shagya, a partbred Arabian stallion with some ancestors of the Kehilan and Siglavy strains. Born in Syria in 1830, he was taller than the average Arabian of the time,standing 15.

 


The Shagya Arabian comes from Hungary and was established during the Turkish occupation of Hungary that lasted until the end of the 17th century.

These attractive horses are mostly grey in colour and show a strong Arab influence with their concave profiles. Shagya Arabians are slightly heavier than their cousin the Arab but have the same lively, energetic temperament.

The Shagya Arabian was developed as a cavalry horse for the famous Hungarian light cavalry. The origins of the breed lie in the Babolna stud in Hungary around 1816.

The Shagya Arabian is a special Arabian breed which is not very well known worldwide because of its rarity. The breed was developed 150-200 years ago on the famous military stud farms of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

No rule without exception, so Shagya Arabians are permitted to stand 14.3 hands. Ponies, trotters, gaited and other horses are not allowed to be registered in AWO.

Thoroughbred, Trakehner, Selle Francais, Anglo-Arabian, Arabian, and Shagya Arabian. With a documented pedigree of four [4] generations. Minimum size requirement of 15.2 [ 157 cm]. These breeds may be registered and branded as Foundation stock.

Not many people realize it but there is definitely more to the Arabian horse breed than meets the eye. One detail that is unfamiliar to many is the emergence of the Shagya Arabian breed.

The Shagya Arabian stallions Gazal III and Siglavy II were then used in order to establish a more stable Anglo-Arabian type. The result was a heterogeneous type known for their excellent jumping and galloping ability.
