The Shan pony, which is also sometimes known as the Burmese pony, was bred by the hill tribes of the Shan states in eastern Burma from descendants of the Mongolian pony.

 


Also called the Shan pony, the Burmese pony isn't a particularly refined breed, however their adaptability and ability to function on difficult terrain makes them well liked in the mountainous regions.

Burma pony belongs to the native breed of the Shan state of Eastern Burma. It was bred by the local tribes in its native region. These ponies look akin to Spiti, Bhutia and Manipuri ponies.

Research done by Shan Thomas for the CS Fund and resulting in the report, Myth and Mystery: The Curly Horse in America, indicates that the Russian breed most often found with the curly coat is the Lokai breed, found in the Taijikistan region.

It is very probable that the Shan Ponies, native to Burma and bred by its hill tribes, were imported to the highlands of Northern Sumatra where there was open country.

Schiltberger spent several years in the Tien Shan mountains. He wrote of the wild horses he observed in his memoirs "Journey into Heathen Parts".
