Spanish Mustangs, also called Colonial Spanish Horses, are of great historic importance. They descend from horses introduced from Spain during the age of the conquest of the Americas. They are a type that is mostly or wholly extinct now in Spain.

During his years in the West, his horses of choice were Spanish Mustangs. His respect for these Spanish descendants was enormous as they thrived on forage that could not support other breeds and never seemed to tire.

It is with a great deal of pride that the breeders and owners of Spanish Mustangs can honestly state that the preservation of the Spanish Mustang has been accomplished without compromising the historical value or uniqueness of the breed.

The Abacos are part of the Colonial Spanish horses that include the Spanish Barbs, Spanish Mustangs, Banker Wild "ponies", the Florida Crackers and the Carolina Marsh Tackys.

Sabino occurs in many breeds including Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Akhal Tekes, Tennessee Walking horses, Spanish Mustangs, Quarter Horses, and Morgans. In fact there are few breeds in which Sabino is absent, Icelandic Horses being one.

Hidalgo is a story about legendary endurance rider Frank Hopkins, who championed "Spanish mustangs." But Sponenberg says the colonial Spanish horses are not the same as the wild mustangs.

It was in 1977 that a herd of seemingly-pure Spanish Mustangs coming from the remote Beaty Butte Range, ended up with Ron Harding. He examined the horses and concluded that they were indeed of Spanish extraction.

During the 1950's, men joined to form an organization that had the purpose of preserving the last of the old type of Spanish Mustangs.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the park repudiated several individuals who claimed that the horses might be Spanish Mustangs and should be protected.

The Spanish stock left in Florida carried a combination of African Barb, Spanish Sorraia & Spanish Jennet blood, similar to Spanish Mustangs, Pasos criollo animals.

He called them Spanish Mustangs, believing that they were the only mustangs with the "true" Conquistador blood.
