Splint bones -- One on either side of the cannon bone; vestiges of toes. Stifle -- The equivalent of the human knee, it is the joint between the femur and tibia, and has a knee cap (patella) attached to the front.
A horse's splint bones are thought to be remnants of toes from prehistoric horses. The splint bones are small bones (about the size of a pencil at the top and tapering down to be much smaller) found on each side of the cannon bone.
Skeletal remnants show obvious wear on the back of both sides of metacarpal and metatarsal bones, commonly called the 'splint bones'. They are the remnants of the second and the fourth toe.
