The Suffolk Punch may possibly descend from the medieval "Great Horse" brought to England in 1066 by William the Conqueror. It was developed in eastern England's Norfolk and Suffolk counties for farm work.

Suffolk draft horses
The Suffolk Punch is one of the breeds of draft horses. The Suffolk Punch has a powerful arching neck, strong upright shoulders, a short strong back, wide hipbones, and a high tail.

Suffolks possess intelligent heads with active ears; powerful and arching necks that are clean cut at the throat. The shoulders are inclined to be upright, suitable for power rather than action.

The Suffolk Punch
The Suffolk Horse is always chesnut in colour (note the traditional spelling without the 't'), often accompanied with a star on the forehead, or a thin reach, blaze or shim down the face. No other colour is seen.

The Suffolk Punch originated in East Anglia, where it remained largely pure and true ot its original form. Today, the Suffolk is bred in other parts of England, as well as abroad, most notably in America.

The Jutland possess enormous strenght.

Through the introduction of different breeds, Oldenburger, Holstein and Suffolk Punch the desired results in breeding couldn't be fulfilled. In 1862 Jutland stallions were imported.

The Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire and Suffolk Punch are the four horse breeds that had a great importance for developing of the Australian Draught.

In the nineteenth century, the Suffolk Punch was crossed with the breeding stock to give the Groningen weight and strength.

If neither of these draft horse breeds is right for you, there are several other excellent choices, including the Belgian, the Shire and the Suffolk Punch. Shires and Suffolk horses are a bit more rare than other draft horse breeds.

One notable point in this project was the introduction of Oppenheim, a Shire stallion with Suffolk ancestry imported during the late 1800s from England. One of his descendants was the stallion Aldrup Mendekal.

Mares of multibreed origin (Perchero-Ardennes-Suffolk-Danish and different varieties of saddle horse) were mated with Brabancon stallions for three to four generations and the progeny were bred inter se.
