The Suffolk Punch may possibly descend from the medieval "Great Horse" brought to England in 1066 by William the Conqueror. It was developed in eastern England's Norfolk and Suffolk counties for farm work.

The Suffolk Punch is the oldest draft breed of Britain that still exists in their original conformational state today. The highest concentration of the breed can be found in their birthplace of East Anglia.

The Suffolk Punch is one of the breeds of draft horses.

The Suffolk Horse is always chesnut in colour (note the traditional spelling without the 't'), often accompanied with a star on the forehead, or a thin reach, blaze or shim down the face. No other colour is seen.

The Suffolk Punch originated in East Anglia, where it remained largely pure and true ot its original form. Today, the Suffolk is bred in other parts of England, as well as abroad, most notably in America.

But while these great titans clashed in mortal combat, the quiet farmers of eastern England went about developing their own breed of heavy horse, the Suffolk Punch.

Height: 16.1 to 17.1 hands high
Colour: Chesnut (traditionally spelt). There are seven shades - bright, red, golden, yellow, light, dark and dull dark.

Shire, Suffolk Punch, Cleveland Bay, and Ardennes blood.

Through the introduction of different breeds, Oldenburger, Holstein and Suffolk Punch the desired results in breeding couldn't be fulfilled. In 1862 Jutland stallions were imported.

The Clydesdale, Percheron, Shire and Suffolk Punch are the four horse breeds that had a great importance for developing of the Australian Draught.

Fortunately the Americans who wanted the semen had a fellow Suffolk Punch enthusiast who was also a pilot with American Airlines.

In eastern England, farmers developed a breed of heavy draft horses, called the Suffolk Punch.

If neither of these draft horse breeds is right for you, there are several other excellent choices, including the Belgian, the Shire and the Suffolk Punch. Shires and Suffolk horses are a bit more rare than other draft horse breeds.

This attractive combination is known as flaxen and is highly prized among some breeds, such as the Suffolk Punch, Jutland and Haflinger. The actual colour of the mane and tail may be honey, flaxen, ivory, or white.

The Draft breeds popular in America are commonly listed as: Clydesdale, Belgian or Belgian Draft, Percheron, Suffolk or Suffolk Punch, and the great Shire.

Initially known as the Flanders horse, its genetic make up found its way into breeds such as the Clydesdale, the Shire as was the Suffolk Punch.

History
These horses were bred in the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark and were originally used as war horses in the middle ages and also for medieval knights. The Cleveland Bay, Shire and Suffolk Punch have influenced the Jutland breed.

During the Middle Ages it was known as the Flanders Horse (after the region of Europe in which it originated) and had great influence on the development of other draft horse breeds, such as the Suffolk Punch, the Clydesdale and the Shire.
