Though farming is now done with machinery, the Swedish Ardennes are still popular as a cart horse, and are also used for hauling timber in mountain areas inaccessible to machinery.

The Swedish Ardennes was developed during the 19th century by crossing imported Ardennes (a heave draft breed from Belgium and northern France) with the indigenous North Swedish horse.

The Ardennes, a French breed, originates from the mountainous region of the Ardennes bordering France and Belgium, although there is a Swedish Ardennes and a Belgium Ardennes.

This breed was developed in Lithuania by crossing Zhumudka horses with the Swedish Ardennes. The third and fourth generation crossbreds (2nd and 3rd backcrosses) were bred inter se.

When breeders crossed the Swedish Ardennes with the Zhumudka horses, the Lithuanian Heavy Draft horse was the result.

The Ardennes is a lighter, mountain bred, version of the Belgian Draft horse. It was used in creating the Baltic Ardennes, Russian Heavy Draft and Swedish Ardennes. They may be bay, roan, chestnut, gray or palomino.
