The breed is small, with most representatives not taller than 14.2 hands, though some may reach 15.1 hands. However, though pony-sized the breed is not a pony breed, it is a true horse in build and conformation.

 


The Syrian bears all the virtues of the Arabian and are extremely tough, hardy, and frugal. They are superbly adapted to a desert climate and cope with both heat and cold, as well as poor nutrition.

The Syrian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus hemippus) was a wild ass found in the mountains and desert/steppe of Syria. The last one died at Schönbrunn Zoo, 1928.
