Once the Tarpan was gone, the Polish Government decided they needed to do something about it and they began collecting animals that resembled the breed. Many of them were Konik horses which are closely related cousins of the Tarpan.

What is a Tarpan?
The Tarpan is a prehistoric wild horse type.

The Tarpan was, for many years, confused with the Asian Wild Horse, and thus no distinction was made between the two. More recently, however, the two breeds have been recognized to be quite significantly different.
The Tarpan is mouse dun or grulla in color. This means that the body is a smoky gray color, with the face and legs being darker than the body. The mane and tail are flaxen, but dark in the center where the dorsal stripe passes through.
The Tarpan has been recently re-intorduced after becoming extinct in the 19th century. The Tarpan has a long face and convex profile, with long ears and a powerful, short neck.

The Tarpan was a wild horse of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Most likely it was grulla in color, although according to some sources some may have been dun-colored as well.

The origin is not exactly known, but most believe the Zhimd to be related to the Konik from Poland, most probably descended from the Tarpan. Most recently, Russian breeds have influenced the Zemaituka, as well as the light Polish breeds.

The Konik is a small, native horse. It is estimated that the Konik has been in existence in Poland since the early 18th Century. It is said to be a direct descendant of the wild Tarpan horse.
One popular theory suggests that our modern domesticated horses sprung from four species of wild stock. These were the Forest horse of northern Europe, the Draft of the same location, the Oriental in western Asia, and the Tarpan of Mongolia.
