The Tennessee Walker, otherwise known as the Tennessee Walking Horse, Garrett Horse, and other variations upon these themes, is a singularly tractable and comfortable riding horse.

In the early 1800s, Narragansett Pacers and Canadian Pacers were crossbred by breeders in the U.S. state of Tennessee while looking for a horse that could handle the hilly terrain of the area.

The Tennessee Walking Horses are generally well-boned, have deep chests and are short-coupled.
The hooves are in proportion to the size of the horse.

The Tennessee Walker was originally bred in Tennessee during the 19th century. As settlers arrived in the area, they were in need of a horse that they could use for work, riding and pulling.

A 20-year-old Tennessee Walker gelding had been diagnosed with Cushing's five or six years previously on the basis of abnormal hair coat, increased thirst and increased urination.

Tennessee Walkers are also known for two other gaits. They are the "flat-foot walk" which is a slow, bold, and even gait; and the "canter" which is a refined gallop with a slow and high rolling motion.

4. Which breed of horses is the oldest breed and foundation of all light horse breeds?

The most prominent characteristic of Tennessee Walkers is their swift and smooth "running walk.
This gait is inherited and cannot be taught to a horse who does not possess it naturally.
Tennessee Walkers are also known for two other gaits.

The Tennessee Walker hasacquired a unique running walk gait which makes it about the most com-fortable ride in the world.

The most notable of these are the Tennessee Walker, Standardbred, and Saddlebred. The Morgan horse had quite a remarkable beginning, and can be traced to just one incredible stallion.

The Champagne gene owes its name to a classic (black) champagne Tennessee Walker mare named Champagne Lady Diane (foaled in 1969). She was named for her color, which reminded her owner of sparkling wine.

This horse was originally called a Tennessee Walker and was a mixture of Naragansett Pacer and the Canadian Pacer. The addition of the Confederate Pacer and Union Trotter to the breed in the 1800's led it to be renamed the Tennessee Pacer.

The Kentucky Saddler was crossed with work- stock then later enhanced with other breeds such as the Morgan and Tennessee Walker. It was common practice to utilize the breeding stock surrounding one's area or community.

Over the years, Saddlebred and Tennessee Walkers were introduced to the line refining the Fox Trotter and giving it a more pleasing disposition.

In addition to the standard walk, trot and canter, the Icelandic horse has tolt, a "running walk" similar to the gait found in the American Saddlebred, Paso Fino and Tennessee Walker.

The Morgan influenced several breeds, especially the American Saddlebred. The Standardbred, the Tennessee Walker and the American Quarter Horse have also Morgan’s blood.

The saddle type is suitable for the same events as the pleasure type and is associated with an American Saddlebred, a Tennessee Walker, or a Missouri Foxtrotter breed.
