TENNESSEE WALKING HORSES
Tennessee Walking Horses
Also known as the Plantation Walking Horse and the Turn Row, this horse was developed in the 19th century. The founding sire was a Standardbred called Black Allan.

Tennessee Walking Horses are known for their gaits: the running walk, the flat walk, and their "rocking horse" canter.

Tennessee Walking Horses were developed for the purposes of riding, driving, and light farm work. They also became very popular with Southern plantation owners who called them Plantation Walkers.

Tennessee Walking Horses come in all colors and a variety of patterns. The diverse color choices are sure to please any horse enthusiast. They perform three distinct gaits: the flatfoot walk, running walk and canter.

The Tennessee Walking horses distinctive gaits - the flat foot walk, the running walk and the canter are inherited.
Young foals can be seen performing the running walk.
Both walks are a loose four beat gate, with a high action in front.

Most Tennessee Walking Horses are born with he ability to do other gaits in addition to the running walk, such as the rack, pace, and foxtrot. The Tennessee Walking Horse is also famous for their "rocking chair" canter.
