The Tersk was first developed in the 1920s and 1940s at the Tersk and Stavropol Studs in the Northern Caucasus mountains in Russia. Marshal S. M. Budyonny (who the Budyonny breed is named after) had great input on the breed.

The Tersk light saddle breed was developed during the 1920-40's at Tersk and Stavropol studs. The foundation stock consisted of the Strelets stallions Tsilindr and Tsenitel and mares of the Arab-Don and Strelets-Kabarda complex.

Tersks have wonderful temperaments and are athletic and versatile. In Russia they are raced routinely and their speeds are faster than Arabs.
The Tersky breed is a warm-blood breed with a very limited open book. For horses to be considered pure-bred their pedigree may not contain more than 1/8 of thoroughbred blood, ½ of Arabian blood or 1/8 of Trakehner blood.

The Tersk was created between 1921and 1950, at the Tersk and Stavropol Studs in the Northern Caucasus, when the Soviet agricultural ministry was concerned to re-establish the horse population.

In recent years, though, Thoroughbred and Tersk blood has been introduced. They are often kept in herds out at pasture all year round, which had helped in developing them into extremely tough and enduring small horses.

It was originally a mix of Central Asian bloodlines, but then it was improved by Persian or Iomud blood, and then by the Karabair. More recently, Lokai horses are crosses with Arabian, Thoroughbred, and Tersk stallions.
There are currently about 3,500 Akhal-Tekes in the world, mostly in Turkmenistan and Russia, although they are also found in Germany and the United States. Many Akhal-Tekes are bred at the Tersk stud in the northern Caucasus Mountains.
These tribesmen worked for the improvement of local horses with contributions from the mentioned horse breeds. In order to make further improvements in this horse breed, Arabian stallions from Bukhara and Thoroughbred and Tersk horses were used.
