The Tibetan pony, also called Nanfan, is an all-purpose breed used forriding, agricultural and pack work. It is descended from Chinese andMongolian ponies, and is closely related to the Spiti and Bhutia ponies ofnorthern India, whom it resembles.

The Tibetan Pony comes from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau and are thought to date back 4000 years. This breed is very special to the local people who developed native stock to suit local needs.

The Tibetan pony is found in Tibet and is probably descended from ancient stock. They exhibits some similarities to the Mongolian pony and to other Chinese breeds, but have remained largely pure for a good many years.

Before the spread of Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, the people were adherents of the religion 'Lung Pe Chhoi', an animistic religion that had some affinities with the Bön religion of Tibet.

Bred and raised in various regions such as Darjeeling, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Nepal, the Bhotia Pony, is a pack and riding horse. The Bhotia Pony is comparable, though less broad than the Tibetan Pony.

Just like the South American Criollos, the Peruvian Criollo or the Andean exhibits the Barb and Andalusian influence on account of the Spanish expeditions and colonization efforts in the region. The Andean, however, is distinctly Tibetan.
