The Timor Pony is the smallest of the Indonesian pony breeds and comes from the island of Timor. They are known for their agility and while they are small in stature, they are incredibly strong & often used as cattle horses.

The Timor, a relatively primitive pony, is found on the Island of Timor, Indonesia. The breed has probably developed from horses taken to the island from India and then established their own characteristics.

TIMOR : These, the smallest of the Indonesian ponies, come from the islandof Timor, the most southerly of the Indonesian islands and the nearest to theAustralian mainland.

The Waler Horse should have an overall stamp of a Thoroughbred with some, displaying Arabian, Welsh or Timor traits. The horse should be sound of wind and limb, and give an overall impression of good breeding and balance.

Parent stock included Thoroughbred, Cape of Good Hope horses (of mainly Spanish descent), Arab, Timor and Mountain pony. The strongest were retained for breeding and despite their mixed origins they developed into a strong and handsome type.

Later there were introductions of Timor Ponies from Indonesia, British pony breeds, various British draft horse breeds and a strong influence of Thoroughbreds and Arabs.

These horses were of English Thoroughbred and Spanish stock; later importations included more Thoroughbreds, Arabs and Timor and Welsh Mountain ponies.

The Australian Pony's ancestors include the English Thoroughbred, the Hackney, the Welsh Mountain and Cob type, the Timor, the Arab, the Exmoor, and Hungarian ponies.

As settlers continued to arrive, they brought with them many other breeds of horses including Timor ponies, British ponies, many breeds of draft horses, Thoroughbreds, and Arabs.

In early Australia, horses were bred for stamina and durability, adding elements of Thoroughbreds, Arabs, Timor and Welsh Mountain ponies. After more than 100 years of breeding a distinctive horse was developed and was common through Australia.

The Australian Stock Horse has been developed from the Thoroughbred, Arabian, Timor Pony and Welsh Mountain Pony.

In order for them to breed true to type the Thoroughbred is to be used as the key influence with
Arabian, Welsh & Timor adding a further dimension.

The waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds (such as the Thoroughbred, Clydesdale, Percheron and Arabian) and the Timor pony.
