The Timor Pony was developed on the Indonesian island of Timor, likely from Indian breeds that were imported to the island. It is used by the local people for cattle work, at which it does well, as well as riding, driving, and light farm work.

The Timor pony breed plays an important role on the island and is used for everything from riding, driving, light farm work, and working with cows. This itty bitty pony shows remarkable strength and endurance and works with cattle really well.

The Australian Stock Horse has been developed from the Thoroughbred, Arabian, Timor Pony and Welsh Mountain Pony.

The waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds (such as the Thoroughbred, Clydesdale, Percheron and Arab) and the Timor pony.
