The name Waler is derived from the term 'New South Waler', a horse bred in Australia's first colony in New South Wales.

Originally named the Waler, it`s name was changed in 1971 to the Australian Stock Horse.

The original Waler was bred as a working horse on the vast sheep stations, and was used in harness as well as under saddle. It was also regarded as an excellent cavalry remount; R.S.

Despite the mixed origins of these horses, they developed into a strong and handsome type which was eventually called the Waler after the colony of N.S.W. J.C. Byrne in his "Twelve Years Wandering the British Colonies" (1848) wrote "...

After the First World War, despite the recognition Australian horses had won and although the Waler was known as a distinctive type, there was not stud book or registry.

They are descended from a cross between the native Kathiawari, oriental stock, the Australian Waler and a subtantial amount of English Thoroughbred.

Now extinct purebred Waler horse was ancestry of the Australian Stock Horse, but it is believed that original bloodlines came from Arabian and Barb horses.

The hardiness of the Waler made him a natural mount for the cavalry and when the British found themselves under- mounted at the time of the Indian Mutiny the Waler came to the rescue.

Originally called the Waler, the Australian Stock Horse was recognized after the First World War. In 1971, the Australian Stock Horse Society was created, in order to recognize and formally organize the Australian breed of horses.

Along with the Waler, the Australian Stock Horse is a source of enduring pride. Both horse breeds maintain similar origins along with the Brumby but are now distinct breeds.
