The Welsh Cob originated in Wales, in the west of Great Britain, and existed there around the year 1600 B.C. These horses were used in war time for driving forces in the required direction and for carrying loads.

This horse has been bred in Wales for centuries. It's ancestor was the Andalusians living on the Welsh borders in the 11th century.

The Welsh Cob (Section D) is the largest of the Welsh horse breeds, not less than 13.2 hands high, with no upper limit in the breed rules.

The general character of the Welsh Cob is the embodiment of strength, hardiness and agility.

The Welsh Cob has been in existence for centuries. At one time, it was used primarily as a war and farm pony because of its enormous strength. Today, it is used primarily in the harness.

The Welsh Cob is an ancient breed descended from Wales. They are the largest and strongest of Welsh breeds (Section D in the Welsh Stud Book). They are courageous, good jumpers, good swimmers and able to carry a substantial weight on their back.

At shows Welsh Cob classes always draw the crowds who love to see these magnificent creatures shown in hand by experts, displaying their presence and courageous action.

Over the years, evidence has been found indicating that native breeds in Wales existed prior to 1600 BC. Even Julius Caesar, upon his traveling to Britain in 55 BC, was enthralled by the Britons and their exquisite chariot horses.

Driving, when applied to horses, Ponies, mules, or donkeys, is a broad term for hitching equines to a wagon, carriage, cart, sleigh, or other conveyance by means of a harness and working them in this form.

No wonder in these days of rising costs and enforced economy the Welsh Cob (and his smaller counterpart, the Welsh Pony of Cob type) becomes more and more popular as he gets better known.

Like the Welsh Pony, farmers commonly used the Welsh Cob, and he also served as a military mount.

A number of cob breeds are popular in the UK, including the Welsh cob, the Irish Cob and the "Coloured Cob" or "Gypsy Cob," known in the USA as the Gypsy vanner horse.

The Welsh Section D Pony, or Welsh Cob as it is also known, became well established as a breed by the fifteenth century and was used mainly for farm work and as a means of transport, both ridden and in harness.

The Welsh Cob pony, which stands to a height not exceeding 13.2 hands, is heavier and more cob-like in appearance than either Welsh Mountain or Welsh pony. The Welsh Cob pony is also known as a Section C ...

However, the most memorable and the most colorful influence is probably the grey stallion Cannon Ball, sired by Dynamite out of a native mare and grandson of the Welsh Cob, Prince Llewellyn.

He was born in 1789 and it is thought that his father was a Welsh Cob or a Thoroughbred and the mother probably had Arab blood. Figure became a terrific work horse: plowing, on a harness, but also as a saddle horse.

Two days later, Noddy, a five-year-old Welsh cobkept in the same field, was slashed with a knife and beaten across theface with a bar. Both are recovering but their owner says the attacks haveterrified the whole community.

" Whether it was Thoroughbred blood, blood of another breed (such as the Welsh Cob), or a combination of types remains open to debate.

Figure was later used for plowing and pulling timber and won many pulling contests with him. The origins of Figure are uncertain but it is believed Welsh Cob, Thoroughbred, Arabian and Barb were all present in his background.

Used mainly in harness in the past
Section D - Welsh Cob is slightly larger version of mountain-type pony. A cross between Welsh Mountain ponies and Spanish horses. Good trotter, used to create and improve trotting breeds worldwide.
