The Westphalian's background is basically a refined version of the heavy farm horses used in the area. Hanoverian blood was then introduced, resulting in a horse of great conformation and show ability.

Like its neighbour state, Hanover, also Westphalia has a jumping horse on its coat of arms, and in both states horse breeding has a long standing tradition.

The Westphalian, like all German Warmbloods, is named after the area in Germany from which it originates (the Trakehner being an exception).
The Westphalian horse is from its origin also a Hanover breed, but with a registry of its own and an own state stud at Warendorf.

It is quite common that the horse breed is also known as Rheinish-Belgian, Rheinish-Westphalian, German Coldblood, Rhineland Heavy Draft and Niedersachsen Heavy Draft.
They were also an increasing influence on other German warmblood breeds, and were used to improve the Westphalian and Mecklenburg stock, as well as being introduced at Celle and Dillenburg, breeding centers for the famous Hanoverians.
These sires include Hanovarian (which have the most sires in the studbook), Trakehner, Thoroughbred, Cleveland Bay, Oldenburg, Westphalians and Norman Horse, so as other German Warmbloods.
Today's Bavarian Warmbloods, though, are based mainly on Hanoverian and Westphalian blood, which they appear most like. They were also refined with some Thoroughbred and Trakehner blood.
Thoroughbreds were used first to refine the Oldenburg, then Trakehners, Anglo-Normans, Anglo-Arabians, Selle Francais, Hanoverians, and Westphalians. The resulting horse is an excellent sport horse that is more refined than its predecessors.
