Akoya oysters: Mollusks of choice in the cultivation of saltwater pearls. Alluvial deposits: Gem deposits found in water after they have been separated from the mother rock.
Akoya oysters also produce other shapes of Pearls. Upon close inspection you will find that round Pearls are seldom perfectly round due to the fact that they form naturally.
Less than 50 percent of Akoya oysters survive the nucleation process. Of all Akoya pearls produced, less than 5 percent are considered high quality.
Produced by Japan's Akoya oysters, they are the most popular of all pearl types. Depending on the size of the mother oyster, they grow from 3-10mm. Colors range from white, cream and pink to light green, blue and silver.
