Amorphous solid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An amorphous solid is a solid in which there is no long-range order of the positions of the atoms.

Amorphous
Without a regular internal atomic structure or external shape. Examples are glass, opal, or amber.

Amorphous Gems
"Amorphous" literally means "without form", but, of course, these materials have a form--> it's just not highly regular and predictable, nor is it expressed outwardly by the formation of crystals.

AMORPHOUS. Without form, shapeless.
AMULET. From hamalet (Arabian), to carry. A charm, or talisman, worn on the person to ward off disease, accident, or other harm.
ARBORESCENT. Resembling a tree in appearance.

Amorphous
Amorphous refers to a stones lack of a consistent internal structure. Most gems have a crystal structure but others like amber for example do not.
Amulet
Amulet is a charm worn to bring good luck or to ward off evil.

Amorphous Gemstones without a crystal structure are referred to as amorphous. These include gems such as amber, coral, opal and pearl.

Amorphous
Amorphous means without form. An amorphous gem, like jet, amber, or ivory, does not have a regular internal structure, like those gems that fall within the seven crystal systems.

amorphous carbon A soot produced by partly-burned hydrocarbons, kerosene or natural gas.

Amorphous: A gem lacking a distinct crystalline structure such as amber, ivory, and jet.

amorphous (a layered silica formed in a precipitation process and cemented with a hydrous silica cement)
Envronment:
precipitation process, or "fossilization product" as in the replacement of organic materials (opalized wood, clam, shell, etc.) ...

Amorphous...Has no characteristic external form or shape. The arrangement of the atoms and molecules are irregular
Amphiboles...A group of closely related, dark colored rock forming silicate minerals, as in, actinolite, hornblende.

Amorphous (amorphous)
Literally-without shape. Minerals without regular arrangements of atoms and consequence no regular crystal structure.

amorphous
The adjective amorphous, when applied to gemstones and gem materials, means a substance lacking crystalline structure. Amber and glass are examples of amorphous materials.
andalusite ...

Amorphous: A gem that does not have a consistent internal structure. Examples include amber, jet and ivory.
Amphibole: A rock forming mineral composed of magnesium-iron silicates with traces of other elements.

Amorphous (non-crystalline) materials, such as opal, amber, and glass, may scatter light in unusual directions due to internal stress and display a phenomenon known as anomalous double refraction.
Refractive Index ...

An amorphous mineral, popular in gemstones when it exhibits some play of color
Opaque
Lacking transparency, impervious to light ...

Opal, an amorphous form of hydrous silica, was once held to be unlucky, but maybe this was only because the stone is rather fragile and tends to chip and scratch easily. As it contains a high percentage of water, opal may deteriorate in heat and cold.

Opal - an amorphous composition of microspheres of cristobalite, SiO2.nH2O, precipitated from silica gel into layers or nodules in veins and cavities of volcanic and sedimentary rocks in numerous areas of the earth.

Opal is an amorphous hydrous silica. Some varieties display vivid colors in what gemologists refer to as play-of-color. White and black opal and some orange opal exhibit this phenomena.

Opal is an amorphous form of silica (SiO2, nH2O). It is made up of sub-microscopic spheres of silica with a little amount of water. Air also trapped in the spaces between these round spheres. The amount of water in opal may 3% to 21%.

Opal, being amorphous, does not form crystals, and is generally found as layers or nodules within igneous or sedimentary rock. Amorphous materials such as opal are deposited at low temperatures by ground water that is saturated with silica.

Opal: An amorphous non-crystalline variety of silica which is softer and less dense than quartz.

Opal: An amorphous mineral. In great demand as a gemstone because of its unique display of multiple colors. Mostly found in Australia. October birthstone.
Oval cut: A brilliant style of cutting in which the outline is elliptical or oval.

Pastes, being amorphous, are singly refracting, as is diamond. This fact helps the appearance of the paste brilliant, for light does not divide within it to become weakened in power.

A mineral, an amorphous form of silica, SiO2 with some water of hydration, found in many varieties and colors, including a form that is milky white.
Opalescence
Milky blue form of iridescence.

earthy luster Luster describing minerals that are microcrystalline or amorphous and have very poor reflective surfaces. ebb tide A tide that lowers the water surface of an ocean and moves the shoreline farther seaward.

Native copper, the copper carbonates azurite and malachite, and the amorphous copper silicate chrysocolla are copper-bearing substances.

Amber is an amorphous stone, meaning that, like glass, it does not have an ordered structure.

Opal is a mineral composed of noncrystalline (amorphous) silica (and some water) and is a species of quartz.

Opal is amorphous (i.e. noncrystalline), hydrated silicon dioxide (SiO2 * nH2O), that contains about 3-15% H2O by weight.

GLASS - An inorganic, amorphous substance that is in a unique physical state. It cools to a rigid state, however, without crystallization. A variety of constituents may be used to create it.

Diatoms are a kind of algae that form exquisite skeletons of amorphous silica (learn more here at the UCMP site). DE is not abrasive to humans or metals or anything else in our everyday world.

The normal formation consists of acryptocrystalline aggregate with the crystallites so fine that the material maybe considered to be practically amorphous, which means the rocks are very porous.

When artificially extracted, silicon appears as a dark brown amorphous powder, or as a dark crystalline substance with a metallic luster.

Reef Gold is found in metamorphous or igneous rocks, while Placer Gold is found in alluvial or placer deposits. The process of separating gold from these ores is known as extracting.

The play of colors seen in opal is caused by the diffraction of light from regularly arranged transparent spherical particles of cristobalite, an amorphous silica, and the voids between these particles.

While it is possible that some inclusions may be of graphite, the commonest form of carbon, or amorphous carbon, such inclusions are quite rare.

Etymology: Latin opalus, from Greek opallios, from Sanskrit upala stone, jewel
: a mineral that is a hydrated amorphous silica softer and less dense than quartz and typically with definite and often marked iridescent play of colors ...

Amorphous - Lacking crystalline structure, as in Amber.
Amygdule - A small cavity in a rock, often lined or filled with crystals.
Anhedral - Showing no typical crystal form or crystal faces.

Pearls range in size, shape and color: some are large, round and white while others are small, amorphous, and black. Pearls have always been considered classic gemstones, symbolic of beauty and dignity. The pearl is the zodiac gemstone for Cancer.
