The atmosphere in which the gem is "baked" is important, as it will influence whether its ions gain or lose electrons. That is, it will determine if a chromophore ion will be changing from Fe3+ ---> Fe2+ or vice versa.

An atmosphere of magic and charm has always surrounded rings. There has been a strong believe that both good and bad spirits inhabited rings. One of the many charges levied against Joan d'Arc was that she owned rings of magic.
