: Azurite-Malachite
Specimen of azurite-malachite, which is a naturally-occurring mixture of the vivid royal-blue, or "azure" mineral known as azurite (chessylite), and bright-green malachite.

Facetable crystals are small and rare, but azurite is frequently found in massive deposits in combination with malachite , with which it makes an interesting color combination for cabochons and ornamental items.

AZURITE
Overview: Azurite is formed from the oxidation of copper ores. Azurite is sometimes coated with a colorless wax or impregnated with plastic in order to enhance the color and increase the hardness.

Malachite and azurite are usually correctly named, but "lapis lazuli" is a name that is frequently misused, being applied to crackled quartz that has been stained with Prussian blue, or some other dye, to an unconvincing resemblance to true lapis.

Enhancements
Like malachite, azurite-malachite is occasionally coated with colorless wax, or rarely impregnated with plastic and/or other hardened agents to improve durabilty and appearance.

This carbonate mineral is often found along with other semi precious stone known as Azurite, which is dark blue in colour. Thus, it shares the same properties as that of Azurite.

As any mineral photographer knows, photographing azurite is very difficult. My first photos with SoLux illumination rendered a Tsumeb azurite dead-on. I was convinced and have been using them for the last year as my only light source.

There are some minerals for which this is very helpful -- azurite is always blue and galena is always silver, for example -- but some minerals can come in any color, (e.g., calcite, quartz, fluorite) and most do come in more than one.

This opaque green mineral is composed of azurite, malachite, turquoise, and chrysocolla. The hardness of this copper-based stone varies. There are many variations on its spelling, including Eliat, Elat, and Ellat.

Many common minerals crystallize in this symmetry class, including azurite, clinopyroxene and clinoamphibole groups, datolite, epidote, gypsum, malachite, orthoclase, realgar, titanite, spodumene, and talc.

A secondary copper mineral, malachite is a popular gem that has light and dark vivid green bands. Many beautiful specimens of malachite contain special combinations with other minerals, such as azurite, cuprite or chrysocolla.
