2. Blue spinels are infrequently seen in commerce. They never equal the fine sapphire in their color, being more steely. They, of course, lack dichroism and are softer than sapphire as well as lighter.

Cobalt Blue Spinel
Resembling fine sapphires, these exceptional blue spinels from Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam are sometimes colored by cobalt.

It comes handy while dealing with some green, red or blue stones, like blue Spinel and blue Topaz. It detects dyes in gemstones also.
Spectroscope
Spectroscope is also used to separate natural gems from synthetic gemstones.

Recent discoveries in the Tundru region of Tanzania in East Africa have produced some beautiful sapphire and teal colored blue spinels - in these deposits, sapphire and spinel occur together and sometimes require gemological analysis to separate.

Sintered synthetic blue spinel was once used as an imitation of lapis lazuli, but is rarely seen today.

Gahnospinel is a rare blue spinel stone that is high in zinc and magnesium. It can only be distinguished from most spinel by its high specific gravity and high refractive index. Gahnospinel has a hardness of 8, a specific gravity of 3.97.

Good red spinels and good blue spinels command prices near the top of the secondary market, but are not anywhere near on par with their ruby and sapphire counter parts. Pink spinels, and other pale colors have far less value.

There is a synthetic blue spinel that can be distinguished from natural blue spinel by use of a colour filter, and a synthetic red spinel that resembles ruby but is distinguished by its fluorescence.

Another extremely rare variety is the attractive cobalt blue spinel, seen only in small sizes in some mineral collections.

So too are rare, deep blue spinels, particularly when a gemological laboratory has determined that cobalt is the colouring agent. Locality is playing an important role for collectors as well.

The resulting color change of the aquamarine is permanent and the treatment is difficult to detect. Synthetic blue spinel is easy and inexpensive to produce, and is often mistakenly sold as "synthetic aquamarine." ...
