Bohemian Garnet: A pyrope garnet very deep red in color that was used in many pieces of Victorian jewelry. They are said to have curative powers. Named for the region in which it was found.

When most people think of garnet, they picture the dark red bohemian garnet that was popular in Victorian times.

Pyrope garnets are another common dark red variety found in "Bohemian garnet" jewelry. Bohemian garnets were mined in the l9th century in Czechoslovakia but the mine is now depleted. Today beautiful small pyrope garnets are mined in Arizona.

The deep red of Bohemian Garnet was hugely popular in the late 18th and 19th Centuries and examples of these stones cut small and en cabochon, and clustered together on brooches, hair pins and rings can be found in many antique shops and markets.

The Bohemian garnets are of the pyrope or fire-red type. Relatively few large stones of sufficient transparency for cutting are produced in the Bohemian mines.

The versatile garnet comes in a virtual rainbow of colors, from the deep red Bohemian Garnet to the vibrant greens of the Russian demantoid and African tsavorite.

Almandine garnet are red varieties, with pyrope being the common Bohemian garnet found in much Victorian and turn of the century jewelry. Demantoid garnet is a much rarer bright green variety, first mined in the mid-nineteenth century.

Pyrope has tradenames some of which are misnomers; Cape ruby, Arizona ruby, California ruby, Rocky Mountain ruby, and Bohemian garnet from the Czech Republic.

Black titanium, green in colour is named as Melanite. Some more trade names used for pyrope garnet are Rhodolite, Bohemian garnets and Malaya.

Fine-quality pyrope garnets from Czechoslovakia are often called Bohemian garnets.

In Victorian times garnets were extremely fashionable; rose cut garnets from the Czech Republic covered entire jewelry items. These garnets are better known as Bohemian garnets after the area they were mined: Bohemia.

Pyrope Garnet: A poppy or blood-red colored garnet composed of alumina magnesia. It is used as a gem. Sometimes called an "American Ruby", "Australian Ruby", "Arizona Ruby", or "Bohemian garnet". See also Rhodolite.

That genuine Bohemian garnet jewellery was traditionally set with a large number of small stones, which were close to one another like the seeds of a pomegranate, with their red sparkle.
