The Brilliant Cut
The brilliant cut for diamonds was invented or perfected over 60 years ago, and is quite simply the best cut for most diamonds, and the most popular.

Brilliant Cut Facets
The Brilliant Cut Diamond has 58 Facets on the surface. 33 of these cuts are on the Crown (Top Portion of the Diamond), and 25 Facets on the Pavilion (Bottom Portion of the Diamond).

Types of Brilliant Cut
Until the beginning of this century the forms of diamond cuts developed empirically. as men strove to attain an optimal brilliance effect.

The modern "Round Brilliant Cut" (below) was developed by Belgian diamond-cutter Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. This cut is also known as the "Tolkowsky Cut" and "Tolkowsky Brilliant.

Brilliant Cut: One of three styles of faceting arrangements. In this type of arrangement, all facets appear to radiate out from the center of the diamond toward its outer edges.

This is the most classic and timeless of all shapes. More than 75% of diamonds sold for engagement rings or in jewelry are round brilliants. The round brilliant diamond is the most brilliant diamond shape in existence.

Round brilliant cuts follow exact standards, so you can make a good estimate of the carat weight of the stone based on the stone's diameter.

The diamond industry can be broadly separated into two basically distinct categories: one dealing with gem-grade diamonds and another for industrial-grade diamonds.

Modified brilliant cuts, such as the pear shape can at best approach the brilliance and sparkle of a perfect round brilliant cut, but if they are badly proportioned, it is also easy for them to lose brilliance.

The round brilliant cut diamond is by far the most popular shape, and accounts for about 3 out of 4 diamonds purchased today.
