About Brown Diamonds
Many people describe brown or brownish diamonds as "champagne" diamonds, presumably because it sounds more exotic, expensive and desirable. Certainly brown is not a "high preference" colour, i.e.

 


Brown Diamond - Although not as frequently encountered as a yellow body color, brown tints in diamonds are next to yellow in occurrence. These stones are also known as top light browns and "cognacs" or "coffees".

Brown Diamonds have become very popular in the last 20 years or so. With effective marketing and wonderful pieces of Jewelry being designed, Brown Diamonds have found their way into homes and our hearts.

If you want to speculate on a fancy diamond at affordable prices, browns are a natural choice. The connoisseurship of brown diamonds may be in its infancy. In essence, these are the only colored diamond bargains left.

The brown diamonds shown below are examples of annealed stones. The second photo shows an irradiated blue stone before and after annealing.

Brown diamonds, which are generally less appreciated than other fancy colors and therefor, sold at a greater discount, have become more commonplace as Australian colored diamonds have gained in popularity.

Colorless diamonds for example, are valued more highly than yellow or brown diamonds, simply because colorless diamonds are more rare.

Brown Attractive or vivid brown diamonds are rare, and classed as fancy coloured, slightly brownish stones (off-white) are slightly less common than slightly yellow, and offer reasonably priced alternatives to colourless stones.

Yellow metal makes slightly yellow or brown diamonds appear more colorless, while darker yellows and browns look darker and richer in yellow gold setting. Warmer colored diamonds (K-Z) are particularly desirable when set in yellow gold.

Champagne Diamond: A pinkish brown diamond mostly mined in Australia. The color comes from their low nitrogen content.

It is useless to deny that by the unaided eye one might be deceived into thinking that a fine brown zircon was a brown diamond.

As with most other gems, yellow/brown diamonds are the least valuable of the fancies though champagne diamonds are particularly striking and lovely.

The color of the diamond ranges from D-X for white and yellow diamonds but one can also find green, pink, red, blue and brown diamonds that are usually treated to bring the variety.

Similarly, the HPHT technique has also been applied to type Ia brown diamonds by several companies, yielding fancy yellowish green and greenish yellow colors. Pink and blue colors have also been produced by the same technique.

[6] The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) classifies low saturation yellow and brown diamonds as diamonds in the normal color range, and applies a grading scale from 'D' (colorless) to 'Z' (light yellow).

Needless to say, stones treated in any way are worth far less and this is something any careful purchaser should remember. Treated brown diamonds should sell for about 50% to 75% less than a naturally colorless stone, ...

For most yellow and brown diamonds their value generally decreases as their grade moves down the scale toward "Z". But once a diamond passes the "Z" grade it becomes more valuable and more expensive.
