Bruiting: The term for shaping the girdle of a diamond, the first step in the cutting process.

Unlike the old mine cut preceding it, the European cut has a round girdle (perimeter) made possible by the introduction of the power bruiting machine (Bruiting is the term for shaping the girdle of a diamond, the first step in the cutting process).

A more or less unequal girdle diameter develops during the bruiting of a rough diamond in which, for example, the cutter is making the most of a slightly rectangular shaped distorted octahedron, ...

Next, bruiting grinds away the edges, providing the outline shape (for example, heart, oval or round) for the gem.

Bearding occurs during the bruiting process of the stone where tiny fractures form along the girdle of the stone and cause a near opaque ring around the girdle of the stone.
