Cameo
A cameo is carved gemstone - most commonly banded agate - or shell glyptograph in which the foreground is carved away, leaving a colored background. This is the opposite of an intaglio.

A cameo is a relief carving (a carving that comes up above the surface) on a shell or stone.

Cameos
Stones and sea shells are referred as cameos. It is the carved portraits in any size of the stone. The portrait is carved above the surface of the gemstone. It seems striking because of the natural colored layers and remarkable carving.

Cameo is a three dimensional carving most notably using the type of sea shell shown in the photo here. Because the shell has different colored layers, the artisan can use the relief to carve and create images with different background colors.

Cameos are created by a process of carving through layers of soft, but durable materials such as agate and conch shell. Lifting off layers of these type of stones create color differences that in turn create three dimensions.

Cameos and intaglios are similar in that both usually are carved portraits in stone or seashells. They differ in that cameos are raised portraits, while intaglios are carved down into the surface of the material.
