Carnelian (or cornelian) is de translucent red variety of chalcedony which on its turn is a form of cryptocrystalline quartz.

Carnelian is a member of the chalcedony-group. The name Carnelian (sometimes called Cornelian) comes from the Latin word ‘carnis’ meaning flesh and applies to any agate that is red to reddish-brown or flesh-colored.

Carnelian is actually a form of chalcedony.
As such, it's a member of the quartz family.
Like onyx or agate, it has a microcrystalline
structure and is translucent to opaque
(unlike amethyst, a quartz found in large crystals).
