A gemstone, commonly jade, that has been carved into a shape or carved with a picture.
A cameo is carved gemstone - most commonly banded agate - or shell glyptograph in which the foreground is carved away, leaving a colored background. This is the opposite of an intaglio.
Different colours and types of chalcedony, from agate to chrysoprase, have grown in popularity with the growing appreciation for carved gemstones and artistic cutting and carving.
Fortunato Castellani (1793-1865) was an Italian jewelry whose work revived the early Etruscan style of jewelry. His beautifully-made pieces had intricate workmanship including the ancient Etruscan art of granulation and carved gemstones.
Rhinestones were everywhere! Pavé set stones in mostly white metal led the fray. Pavé means paved in French. The stones were set very close together with little metal showing. Carved gemstones also were popular.
